So, it's not surprising that a lot of investigators have day jobs that include such work. Most people believe that investigating the paranormal is a lot of gadgetry, scary dark corners and talking to the dead. But in all honesty, investigating takes people skills, coaching skills and extremely advanced communication skills. You have to be able to adapt to less than desirable conditions and deal with clients that are scared, sad, manic, troubled, confused, angry, nervous, needy, apprehensive and most of all looking to you for answers. And sometimes, there are no answers to be given, only reassurance of the most basic principles of the paranormal....YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR HOME. You have the power and you get to decide who and what resides there.

I cannot tell you how many investigations I have been on where the homeowners are startled by this fact. And honestly, this is probably why our group stays so busy. But it is our job to educate people about what they are experiencing and how to cope with it. It is easily one of the best parts of the job.

Okay.. enough of that. Now for some fun news... Miss Paranoise herself has just RSVP'd to the Haunted America West Coast Paranormal Conference in San Diego!! This will be my first ParaConference and I am so excited, because this is a really good one that has been going on for 15 years and this is the first time they have had it on the west coast! Looking forward to blogging about my experiences there! If you are interested in joining me, you can click here for more info.

But, that's not all! Looks like I might also be taking another trip down to So Cal in November for a Nightwatchers event on the haunted Queen Mary!! API is the Northern California rep for Nightwatchers, a public paranormal group that does public investigations in famous haunts. I am REALLY looking forward to this one and should you want to check it out too... here's the link! http://www.nightwatchersevents.com

Now, go out and enjoy this unusually cool and amazing August day...

xoxoJeannielee

time after time

Oh little blog o' mine. How I have neglected you. It's not that I haven't been writing though. I feel like that is all I have been doing these last few months! From publishing the latest issue of API's newsletter and designing new brochures, to taking on new projects like the TAPS Family Newsletter, and even writing new songs for my band, Ahoy!. I have definitely been running my engines full throttle lately. My health has not been all that great either, so blog...here is my apology. "I promise to write something in you at least once a month for the rest of the year, no exceptions!" In fact, I am going to set myself a reminder to do so on the 13th of every month. Ah, lucky 13.

As far as insights into the paranormal, I'll be honest with you...I don't really have any right now! Except to say that I am looking forward to getting out from behind my computer screen and back into the field to investigate. Oh to sit in a dark room with a flash light, a voice recorder and a camera rolling. To feel a chill run up my back, to hear footsteps in the next room, to see a flash of light. To get that rush of adrenaline, when you're scared to move, but you do it anyway. Ah, there's nothing like it. in.the.world.

While our group mainly investigates private residences, where that sort of excitement doesn't always happen, sometimes we get the opportunity to investigate a public building or property. Investigating private homes is mainly for clients who need help. We are not there to have our own experiences, but to gather evidence and assist the clients. Public buildings or known haunts, on the other hand, can be used for research or trying out new equipment and truly trying to connect with the other side. I have been craving an investigation like this lately and hopefully, we will have one on the books very soon. :)

In the meantime, I will quench my thirst for experience by reading of others tales. In fact, if you are interested in checking out this quarter's issue of the API newsletter, it is all about the rich tradition of storytelling.

Click here to check it out.

Okay, break over. It seems that the Universe decided to make me insanely busy these last few weeks, giving me ZERO time to reflect and wax on about paranormal fun. I've stolen a few moments from my day for you now, so um... Hi!

So what's new in the paranormal world of me? Well, the last month or so has really been dedicated to research, reading and learning. I am constantly amazed at just how much information is out there. Books, blogs, newsletters, podcasts, you name it. I am still deep into religion research, but there are SO many aspects of the paranormal that interest me and deserve further digging. Shadow people intrigue me, I want to do some in depth research on EVP, and the one that is at the forefront of my mind, is the use and/or role of sensitives or psychics in paranormal investigations. For many reasons, this one, above all, will be my next destination of research.

API is working on some very special projects that pertain to this topic and without saying too much, I think those of you that are also interested in this topic, will be pleasantly surprised come next year. So stay tuned!

Aside from that, I have a personal interest in the work of sensitives in paranormal investigations for two reasons. One, I have always known there was something to it, as I had blocked certain "psychic" things and experiences that have happened throughout my life, only now to embrace them. And two, I have seen and heard some unbelievable things since working with the sensitives in our group. Being privy to information prior to a case (where the sensitives are NOT) and watching as they tell me things exactly as they appear on my notes, is mind blowing! Even the hardest skeptic would have a hard time understanding exactly how these folks knew or sensed something they had no prior knowledge of. It has been a fascinating piece of the paranormal puzzle and one that I definitely believe deserves further exploration.

Ok, I'm off the bookstore. If you want to find me, i'll be in the ghost section ;)

xoJeannielee

TV & the paranormal.

With the HUGE onslaught of paranormal TV shows, the number of cases in the last year soared into record numbers. It suddenly seemed as if all of Nor Cal was haunted and needed help! My guess? I think there are two things going on here:

1. TV shows have made the paranormal more mainstream and therefore, I believe people are more open to reaching out for assistance. They no longer feel weird or embarrassed to admit something is going on in their home that they cannot explain and feel more comfortable talking about it with someone.

2. TV shows have made it popular, in fashion if you will, to live in a haunted house or have a business with a resident ghostie. Being haunted is literally good for business! Which is all fine and dandy by me. If there are claims and people want answers, then we're there. But a lot of times, these claims are debunked, or can be explained by natural occurrences and not the paranormal.

But that is what we do. We are not here to judge, API is just here to help. Period.

It seems though, that the TV craze has died down some. The newness of the shows is wearing off and I can't help but wonder if there is a direct tie with this and the fact that we have slowed down as well. I think it might have a little to do with it, but there are so many theories out there about paranormal activity. Personally, I think these things are cyclical and the summer just might prove to be as busy as last year.

I have to say though, that aside from the early episodes of Ghost Hunters (first 2 or 3 seasons) I really haven't seen a show that has caught and kept my attention. What was so great about the early Ghost Hunters episodes was that you saw the inner workings of the group: the fighting, the day to day headaches and joys of being in a paranormal group. You saw T.A.P.S going into homes and helping people who were scared and needed help. It was personal, intimate and engaging. THIS is how it really is, folks.

I'll admit, I think API would make a fantastic reality paranormal show! The cast of characters that we tote around to investigations are entertaining to say the least. We have it all. Drama, lots of laughter, tender moments with the clients, and something that I think the other shows lack: Perspective.

I was talking to my hubby about this the other night and he said, "you should pitch a show to Bravo TV". Ha! Can you imagine? API's show sandwich in between "Shear Genius" and "The Real House Wives of Orange County"? Brilliant.

TV shows come and go and the industry will soon move on to the next thrill seeking reality craze. When they do, just remember, we are still out there, helping families with or without a camera in our faces :)

Speaking of our faces. Take a look at our member's bio's on our newly updated website. A pretty fab group if I do say so myself ;) http://ap-investigations.com/members.html

xoxoJeannielee

I think, therefore I investigate...

I've been doing some big thinking lately. Big thinking involves me sitting in my living room, most likely perusing facebook, watching some DVR'd TV show and listening to music all at once. Yes, all at once. NO, I don't have ADD, I just like noise, it helps me concentrate. Sorry, tangent. So back to those big thoughts....

I don't know about my fellow team members, but after becoming a paranormal investigator, I began to really take a serious look at my religious upbringing, what it meant and if it had a role at all in my new found passion. The answer, it turns out, is yes. As investigators we are responsible for educating ourselves about as many religious beliefs as possible, because like it or not, ghosts/spirits/paranormal and religion are intimately connected. Typically a person's religious beliefs can determine not only what the client believes is happening in their home, but also why and how it will be resolved. It can even explain the origins of the activity as well. There is a vast amount of information out there and you need only to begin to research one thing, and you will ultimately end up reading about 10 more things you had no idea were connected.

There was a brief moment in time that I danced with the idea of majoring in theology in college and now I wish I had at least taken a few classes, because they would've come in handy right about now!! Thankfully, API's members have a wealth of knowledge and we are all continually reading, researching and educating ourselves to keep sharp! It is a topic that I plan on diving into even further. As far as my own beliefs, well.. let's just say the verdict is still out. I was raised as a non-denominational Christian, but do not prescribe to a large amount of the religion. I know some people hate the word "spiritual", but that is where I find myself these days...Drifting, searching, researching, learning. I think it's a good place to be. I'm open to different ideas and that can't be all bad :)

On a lighter note.. (no more big thoughts for now), the new API newsletter will be coming out in March, so if you are not signed up on our mailing list, send your e-mail to me and I'll make sure you're on the list!!
Our newsletter will be a quarterly e-publication with articles about everything from ghost lore, to debunking techniques, to upcoming events!! It's must-have for the paranormal enthusiast in your life, so sign them up!! Here is my email: Jeannieh@ap-investigations.com

Our website is just a hop, skip away from being finished with a complete overhaul!! Stay tuned readers and I will let you know when it's finished!!!

That's all for now folks. Hope you are all enjoying the fake spring we've been having, because I think the rain is back on the radar once again. I mean, I'm not complaining because I love rain, but I have to admit, a little sun, some flip flops and a cool breeze sits right with me :)

Love and ghosties,
Jeannielee

so many ghosts, so little time...

Whew!! First of all, we have some amazing investigators that are so knowledgeable and able to use their skills for good, that it is awe inspiring to be able to work along side them and soak up all that experience! Without going into too much detail about the case, I will say this particular entity was icky and needed to move on. After stationing ourselves in the client's bedroom, we attempted to draw the entity into the room. It took a few tries, but I'll tell you this, you could DEFINITELY feel the room change when he arrived. I don't normally spook that easily at investigations, but I will admit, I was CREEPED the eff out. But no running, no turning on of lights, I stood my ground and didn't let it get to me. I knew this dude enjoyed being creepy and I didn't want to give it the satisfaction of knowing that he had succeeded. After the investigators did their thing and we told it to leave, it didn't feel any different. As I stood there, I thought.. hmmm... it's not gone. Sure enough, he was still there. We gave it another try, this time with the client in the room. When it finally left, the room transformed instantly. It felt lighter, you could really tell that something had lifted from the atmosphere and a sort of peace had taken its place. IT WAS SO FREAKIN' AWESOME.

We said our goodbyes and I left the investigation with such a satisfied feeling. THIS is what it's all about folks. That family was going to sleep peacefully that night and the nights to follow. And for you skeptics out there, think of it this way...even if it IS all in our minds, minds were changed that night in a way that gave peace to someone. And that is all that we can hope for. To help those that need help. To make people less afraid and give them understanding that their home is THEIRS. They get to decide who resides there, living OR dead ;)

API is getting ready to induct more members into the group and I am excited to meet some new folks, cause we are so super busy!! Case after case and weekends are filling up. And it's not just us, paranormal groups all over the country are getting slammed. Theories? Thoughts? Maybe all the paranormal shows now on TV? Are people finally coming out of the paranormal closet so to speak? hmmmmm.....

Have a good week everyone!
xo, J

OMG...EVP

One of the more fascinating ideas in parnarmal investigation is audible. EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) is disembodied voices captured on a recording device. Its some of my personal favorite types of evidence out there. Of course, I think everyone enjoys a great bit of video evidence, but for me, getting an answer to a question cannot be disputed. A strange light going up a wall or a shadow caught moving on film will always be questionable, but when you ask a question what is your favorite color, then play back your recorder and hear a male voice saying "green", well... try to figure THAT one out. :)

My first attempt at EVP happened before I joined API. Back in January of 2009. I ventured to a hotel that had claims of hauntings with some friends and we attempted to capture some evidence. When I reviewed the recordings, I was shocked at what I heard. One very impressive EVP caught was a whispered female voice that said "cold....freezing". Another great one that night was in a room where my friend Joy had set up a microphone on a mic stand and the voice said "would you be so kind as to turn the mic up". A definite sign that there was an intelligent haunt going on. The entity was commenting on something that we brought into the room!!! And by "intelligent", I mean just that...a haunting where the spirit/ghost what have you, is aware of their surroundings and can interact/communicate with the living. I will dive deeper into the different types of hauntings in another post! So stay tuned!!

Reviewing evidence is always a thrill. I know, some may think it's boring to sit listening to hours of silence, waiting for those few seconds where something might pop up. But that's just it, isn't it? The thrill of discovery. I've heard ghost hunting described as 8 hours of boredom for 10 seconds of exhilaration. But i'm telling you folks those 10 seconds are worth a hundred hours. Of course evidence is only a small fraction of the process of investigating and the true thrill lies in helping a client become happy and comfortable once again in their home. :)

Here are a few links to browse and hear for yourself some EVP.

http://aaevp.com/examples.htm

http://www.spirits-speak.com/evp.html

Enjoy!

xoxoJeannielee

the touch

After my visual experience up in the hills of California, I was (to say the least) hungry for more. My curiosity was at it's peak and I was determined to figure out just what I had seen and scrutinize every single thing that happened the next time...IF there even was a next time. Some "ghost hunters" have never even had an experience, so I felt fortunate to have seen whatever it was I saw.

Going into my next investigation, I headed down to Red Bluff with the team to investigate a family's home that had been experiencing some paranormal activities. I had no knowledge of any of the activity or history and came into the investigation to do some scientific work. I was assigned to EMF and temperature readings. For those of you that don't know what EMF is, it stands for Electro Magnetic Field. There are several reasons why we take EMF readings during an investigation. #1 - High levels of EMF can cause EMF sensitivity which can make a person feel as if they are experiencing something paranormal. It can cause feelings of dread, of being watched, nausea, fatigue etc... The 2nd reason is the theory that spirits can distort and manipulate EMFs. Therefore base readings are taken and then unknown sources of spikes in EMF can possibly be something anomalous.

So, back to the investigation. We had just unpacked our gear and I had grabbed an EMF detector and a temperature gauge and was asked to follow one of our team members during a walk around the outside of the home. As I began to walk out of a sliding glass door, I felt a hand on my left shoulder grab me and try to pull me back into the house. And when I say pull, I mean, my shoulder went backwards just as if someone was standing there. I turned around instantly and when I saw that no one was there, I think all the blood drained from my head!! NO WAY. It couldn't be!!! My shoulder felt really weird. Tingly, slightly cold and it almost burned in a way. I sat down and tried not to make a scene. I just needed to shake it off, because I was shaken. Deep down, I knew what had just happened and it once again rattled me to my core.

When sitting down didn't do the trick, I unassumingly excused myself and walked out the front door and sat in my car for about 5 minutes. As I sat there, a million and one things were going through my brain. I had just been touched by something that I couldn't see, but I felt it! I couldn't make that up. I wasn't looking for an experience, I was just walking out a door! I took some good deep breaths and tried to ground myself back down to earth. Feeling better, I resumed my role as investigator and finished the night. While I had some other strange occurances that evening ( cold spots, feelings of dizziness) nothing really compared to that touch.

Folks, this was HUGE. this was something I couldn't debunk. Unless of course, you can make the argument that my subconscious wanted to have this experience and I made it happen somehow. But aside from that far fetched theory, I had now had an personal experience that I would take to the bank. No one could take that away from me. Things would continue to change for me and I was elated with what would come next in my quest for answers.

Happy New Year to everyone! I am beyond excited for the possibilities that this new year will bring. Until next time... Happy Hunting!

xoJeannielee

still scratching my head...

the first 3 investigations i attended, nothing happened. well, at least i didn't experience anything that seemed unexplainable. i will admit that there were a few times where i felt a little creeped out, or maybe had some strange feelings, as if something were behind me etc. but nothing that i could write home about. and i have to tell you dear readers, i was beginning to become even more of a skeptic than i was when i started this quest. here i was, entering allegedly haunted homes and not having a single experience!

i remember coming home from a particularly uneventful investigation one evening and telling my husband that i wasn't sure i really believed anymore. NOTHING WAS HAPPENING!! i think at this point, all those years of watching reality ghost shows had tainted my view of what paranormal investigating really was. on tv, something happens every episode! footsteps...what was that!?! they whisper to each other.... yeah, none of that. granted i had only been in the group for 3 months. but i was starting to get antsy. when will i see something?! it weighed on my mind nightly.

when july rolled around, i was invited to tag along on a preliminary investigation. a "prelim" is our first meeting with clients. when someone sends a request for an investigation, they are contacted and after speaking to them on the phone, usually a prelim will be scheduled. typically a smaller group will go out and interview the clients and gather information on the home/business, map out the place, take photos etc. the team can then recommend a full investigation be done, based on info gathered during the interview/prelim process.

needless to say, i was excited to learn more of the process and jumped at the chance to join the team and help with a prelim. this particular investigation was in a teeny tiny little mining town deep in the forest of the sierra nevada's. (please note: real names of places and people will be omitted, for obvious reasons!! ) so 3 of my fellow investigators and i loaded up in my car and off we went.

upon arriving at the client's home, for some unknown reason, i began to feel sort of strange. my stomach began to hurt and when entering the home, a headache soon followed. at the time, i simply chalked it up to a disagreeable lunch.

we decided to split into groups with two of us doing interviews and two mapping the house/taking photos. I was assigned to the latter and my colleague, brad and i began inside the house snapping photos, taking some initial readings of EMF. This was a VERY small home. 2 bedrooms with a fairly good sized basement. an old mining "shack" if you will, that was converted into a nice cozy home for two.

not even 10 minutes after being inside the home, "something" told me to go down to the basement (that "something" is an entirely different post, coming soon!) what i will say about it now, is that it wasn't an audible voice, but a feeling. a very distinct and somewhat out of the blue urge to go down to the basement.

so staying together, i grabbed brad and we headed downstairs. the basement was unfinished. dirt floors, washing machine and a old refrigerator. there were 2 office type florescent light fixtures downstairs that we turned on and i just started snapping photos. with the dirt floor, i was confident that most of my photos would have false "dust" orbs and not much else. after being down there for a few minutes, i began looking around through the screen on my digital camera.

it was then that i saw something. it looked like a mist. a swirly white colored mist. i looked up from my camera and yes, i could also see it without the camera. it was right there not event 2 feet away from me!!! so, i did the only thing i knew to do. i started snapping photos. when i looked down at my camara's preview screen and saw what i had captured. my eyes grew wider and my heart started racing. the mist began to move and i followed with my camera, snapping pic after pic. i called for brad to come look when he got to my side, the mist had moved just over the fridge and it was there that we both saw what looked like a swirly white mist starting to take the shape of a face. my body went completely cold. chills went right through me and it was almost as if you could feel the electric charge in the air. as mesmerized and strange as it felt, the only thing i could think of was, "just keep taking photos, jeannie...don't stop". we followed the mist all the way around the room, until it finally just disappeared just behind the staircase. i stood there in complete shock and IMMEDIATELY told brad... "we have to debunk this. right away". debunking, for those of you that don't know, is trying to find a non-paranormal reason for a paranormal experience. sometimes it can be as simple as a loose floor board, or a leaky pipe. sometimes, you have to dive a bit deeper for an explanation, such as weather, or high amounts of electro-magnetic energy.

So, my first thought was.. it was a combination of lights and dust. so we went about testing our theories, stirring up dust, taking photos with and without the lights on. trying anything and everything to recreate what we both had seen with our eyes and had captured on my digital camera. we couldn't do it. NOTHING came close to it. i still didn't believe it. i couldn't have been. could it? Here are a few of the photos i caught. you be the judge. { Due to the confidential nature of the work we do at API, I am not able to post evidence until it has been posted on our website. Soooo.. as soon as the photos are released on the site, I will post a link. Sorry readers!}

Now, there are a few things i want to point out about this experience. #1 - i have to take into account, how the mist moved. dust does not move like that. nor does it photograph with its own light source. #2 the way my body reacted when that thing started to take shape is something i had never felt before. it was like someone dipped me in ice water. then i tingled everywhere, like when your foot falls asleep and it starts to come back and it tingles. i felt like that all over my body. i wanted to scream with excitement!!! i wanted to jump up and down like a kid on christmas morning. I SAW A GHOST! well, i really don't know what it was that i saw and experience, but it wasn't anything i could explain. and everything that i thought i knew or had known up to this point in my life, felt changed.

what am i supposed to do now? come on, jeannie! you got into this field because you wanted some answers, now all you have are more questions!!! it's funny. i thought i would be scared, frightened and want to run away if i saw or experienced anything. but it wasn't scary. it was almost eerily peaceful in a way. i knew i wasn't going to find an explanation for this, and the implications of that thought is what really scared me. what does this mean? do i really believe that what i saw was something not of this earth? a spirit? a ghost? what was it!!!! what i did know, was that my life was about to change, big time.

readers, i understand skepticism. i relish in the fact that i take everything that happens to me on investigations with a grain of salt. that caught up in a moment, your brain can allow you to have any number of experiences. that if you let yourself, you can turn every sound you hear into footsteps. you HAVE to remain objective at every moment, or fall victim to circumstance. did i see what i saw in that basement, yes i did. whether it was paranormal or not, something happened that i couldn't explain and it was the most fantastic experience of my budding paranormal career :)

My next entry, i will dive a bit deeper into exactly what that "something" was that told me to go down into that basement. stay tuned my lovelies!!!!

xoxojeannielee

gotta start somewhere...

dear readers: welcome to my new blog! this space will be dedicated to my experiences as a paranormal investigator. my experiences on cases and random ramblings about all things paranormal. i will tell you right now, i had NO idea just how much these experiences would change me. you THINK you know how you will react when you experience something that you cannot explain away, but there is just no way to prepare yourself, prepare you mind. i now understand the phrase, "my mind was blown". it has happened to me.

I am in my 9th month of being an investigator with a wonderful group called "American Paranormal Investigations". based in sacramento, this group is dedicated, and i mean DEDICATED to helping people. it is the cornerstone of everything we do. yes, we look for evidence, yes we bring out gadgets and filming equipment, but the majority of what we do is HELP. i can't stress this enough and it is really the reason this group works so well. i'll tell you, most of the time you are not going to capture evidence or confirm any sort of haunting at a location. what you are going to see are people who are scared, tired, anxious, sad and need someone to confide in, someone to believe them when they say they saw a shadow moving around in their bedroom.

API is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and does not charge for any services. it is run solely on donations and the support of it's members. i mention this, because there are a lot of groups out there that are in it for reasons other than helping. i am not here to judge them, but PLEASE, if you are ever in need of a paranormal team, be very careful about who you choose. read their mission statement on their website. do they charge? ask them what happens during an investigation. an investigation is a very personal experience, as you are allowing a team of strangers into your home and into your lives.

okay. done with my soapbox moment. well, that wasn't REALLY a huge soapbox, but important info nonetheless ;)

okay. i'm excited. i hope you are excited too. i can't wait to tell you about all that has happened! story #1 should be up in the next day or two. so bookmark me and stay tuned!!!!

xojeannielee
